“You’re going to see them improve from now to 10 p.m.,” he said, adding that dealers were taking time to talk with guests.
“We’re very happy with the way The Meadows has prepared for test day and the way it’s going. The preparation they put in is now showing on the floor.”
McCabe said the preparation was critical, especially for handling seasoned players of table games.
“You’ll get some people who know how to play, and they can get aggravated if they see that a dealer doesn’t know what he’s doing.”
while the afternoon crowd of invitees was somewhat older, Sullivan said he expected to see younger people arriving after 6 p.m.
Tuesday was also the first day The Meadows dealers were able to test their skills against guests who weren’t their family or friends.
Byron Speer showed up two weeks late for a job fair at the Holiday Inn in February. but the former truck driver landed a job anyway.
Speer’s new job begins Thursday when The Meadows opens its table games at 6 a.m. Speer is among 500 new table dealers who will be working at the casino.
“As far as I’m concerned, I got extremely lucky. I feel very fortunate to be here,” said Speer who, although having missed the job fair, happened to arrive the day auditions for table dealers were being held.
Among those auditioning that day was Ashley Neil of California, who sang “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” Graduating in December from California University of Pennsylvania, she could only find a job as a cashier. Now Neil is a greeter in the casino’s poker room, where she manages an electronic board that lists the names of those waiting to take a seat in one of the room’s 26 tables.
Several dealers have relocated from Wheeling Island to The Meadows, including Kelly Miller, who made the switch believing there is more opportunity in Washington County.
“This is little Pittsburgh here. Washington is really expanding,” he said.
Lance Young, director of table games, said 304 of the table dealers attended the casino’s school. Most dealers are well versed in two or three games and are taught how to protect a game.
Games on the main casino floor in both smoking and nonsmoking areas include craps, blackjack, roulette and baccarat. some of the poker tables feature automatic card shuffling. all have a feature where the dealers can swipe player cards and press a button to order food or drinks right from the table.
McCabe said Tuesday’s test day, which was also held at Pittsburgh’s Rivers Casino and at Presque Isle Downs & Casino in Erie was similar to an exhibition game before the start of football season.
“Today’s an exhibition game; the regular season starts Thursday,” McCabe said.
